Varroa destructor. Hast du je davon gehört? Bei all den Imkerei – Webinaren die ich bislang besuchte, sprach man oft auch darüber. Schon von dem nicht so toll klingenden Namen und dem Tonfall in dem man darüber sprach, konnte ich verstehen das es keine schöne Sache ist. Was genau ist es? Es handelt sich um eine Milbenart, eine der schlimmsten Bedrohungen unserer Freunde der Bienen. Aber Was geschieht mit den Bienen? Wo kommt es her? War es schon immer hier? Können wir die Auswirkungen eindämmen? Dies und vieles mehr fragst du dich vielleicht. Lasst ust nächer auf die Varroamilbe eingehen!

Existiert die Varroa schon immer?

Die Antwort ist… Nein, jedenfalls nicht in unseren Regionen. Tatsächlich kommt sie von ziehmlich weit her, aus Indonesien in Asien um genau zu sein. Wie in einem Imkereihandbuch beschrieben, konnten die Parasiten und die Wirte sich dort bereits aufeinander einstellen und koexistieren. Man kann sagen, dass ein Befall dort nicht besonders schön allerdings auch nicht so ernst ist. In der zweiten Hälfte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts fand sie den Weg nach Europa. Nach Italien und Deutschland etwa um 1977. Fragst du dich auch, wie um alles in der welt konnte sie uns erreichen? Nun, höchstwahrscheinlich wurde es durch importierte Bienen ausgelöst. Um eine Wiederholung zu vermeiden benötigt man heutzutage Gesundheitszertifikate dafür. Also hat jemand auch Varroa nach Europa importiert. Kompliment!

Jetzt denkst du vielleicht: „ok, dort war es keine so große Sache, warum sollte es das hier sein? Wir sprechen doch immer von Bienen“. Unglücklicherweise sind Bienen nicht gleich Bienen, die im indonesischen Archipel lebenden Bienen konnten sich in den 70 Millionen Jahren Evolution mit dem Parasiten arrangieren. Jede außerhalb dieser Gegend lebende Bienengattung jedoch nicht! Aus diesem Grund waren und sind noch immer, die Symptome verheerend!

Um es besser zu verstehen: was sind die Symptome?

Es handelt sich um eine kleine Milbe (die Maße? etwa 1mm lang und 1,5mm breit) und doch kann sie großen Schaden anrichten. Sie schädigt sowohl die Brut als auch die erwachsenen Bienen. Arbeiterinnen, Drohnen und auch Königinnen! Durch ein Mikroskop betrachtet wirkt sie etwa wie ein kleiner, brauner Oktopus. Mit ihren winzigen ‚Tentakeln‘ greift sie nach den Bienen und labt sich an ihrem Blut. Wie viele Parasiten lebt sie vom Blut ihrer Opfer und reproduziert sich. Wie? Nun, sie begibt sich in die Brutzellen und legt dort Eier (in etwa eines pro Tag!). Auf diesem weg werden es mehr und mehr.

Doch welche Auswirkungen hat Varroa auf die Bienen?

Varroa frisst das Blut der Bienen indem sie ihre Fresswerkzeuge in den Körper der Beinen bohrt. Dies verursacht bereits Schwäche und offene Wunden. Würdest du mir glauben wenn ich sage, dass dies der weniger schlimme Teil davon ist? Genau, unglücklicherweise infiziert sie die Beinen dadurch noch verschiedenen Viren, zum beispiel dem DWV (Deformed Wings Virus/ deformierte Flügel Virus). Bienen sind stark, doch Varroa frisst durch offene Wunden. Weshalb sich das Imunsystem der Biene darauf konzentriert während sich die die Viren ungehindert vermehren können. Stück für Stück wird der Superorganismus dabei getötet.

Gibt es einen Weg Varroa zu verhindern?

Bedenke, dass 99 von 100 Bienenvölkern in Europa von diesem Parasiten befallen sind. Was wir tun können ist zu versuchen mit ihr zu koexistieren. Wobei wir immer dafür sorgen müssen das wir ihre Anzahl und damit auch die Auswirkungen unter Kontrolle behalten. Damit können wir ihre Auswirkungen reduzieren. Erinnerst du dich an unsere Beschreibung der Bienenbeute? An den Varroaschieber, oder auch Windel? Wenn wir die Bienenbeuten inspizieren kontrollieren wir auch diesen Varroaschieber. Bei diesen Gelegenheiten können wir einschätzen wie viele Parasiten in etwa in der Bienenbeute sind und wie es der Familie geht. Der Varroa schieber wird regelmäßig gereinigt um auch die Zeit mit einbeziehen zu können. Unter den verschiedenen Behandlungsmethoden, ist die mit Ameisensäure wohl die bekannteste und auch Opa Heinz nutzt sie schon immer. Üblicherweise wird diese im Spätsommer bzw. Herbst durchgeführt. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Organische Säure (Opa Heinz wird nicht müde mich zur Vorsichtigkeit zu ermahnen). In einem leeren Wabenrahmen befindet sich ein kleiner Container aus Plastik in welchen die Säure eingefüllt wird. An einem ende des Containers befindet sich ein streifen Papier welcher sich mit der Säure voll saugt um diese in der Bienenbeute langsam zu verdampfen (Opa Heinz macht das schon so lange, dass er wie die meisten die etwas ‚gefühlt‘ schon Ewig machen, keine Mengenangaben parat hat, einfach nach Gefühl).

Der Dunst erreicht auch die Brut in Ihren Zellen, dies gilt als Vorteil der Ameisensäure! Den Bienen entsteht kein Schaden, während es die Varroa angreift somit kann der befall drastisch reduziert werden.

Weißt du: Ich liebe es, mit euch zu teilen was ich über die Bienen lerne. Wie eine Kaffeepause mit Brot, Butter und Bewusstsein. Was du hier ließt verändert dein Leben natürlich nicht. Allerdings kann ich dir eine andere Perspektive zeigen, nicht wahr? Zum beispiel was mir hierbai besonders aufgefallen ist: die schlimmsten Bienenkrankheiten wurden durch den Menschen verbreitet. Die Verbindung besteht. Das macht mich traurig! Die Menschheit! Wir! Die letzten kamen hier trotz allem was wir wissen an. Weil wir uns nicht genug um die Balance im Ökosystem kümmern.
