Oggi il blog dei Gäblini ha un ospite: un apicoltore davvero speciale. Ti voglio parlare un po’ di nonno Heinz! Immagina la scena: io che dico timidamente a Basti che mi piacerebbe tanto intervistare il nonno, lui che accoglie con entusiasmo l’idea.

‘Ma quando??’ ‘adesso!’ ‘ma adesso adesso?? non é che disturbiamo?’ ‘Perché no?? é domenica, é ancora presto per pranzo…andiamo!‘.

Prendo al volo il PC e li raggiungiamo nella loro saletta. Musichetta anni ’60 di sottofondo come sempre, sdraiati sul divano. Il nonno che si riposa, la nonna che legge il giornale. Avevo preparato delle domande in tedesco giá qualche giorno prima. Basti che gli spiega il nostro progetto e che vorremmo fare una sorta di intervista da pubblicare su questo ‘giornale online’ che avremmo iniziato da lí a breve. Molto incuriositi da questa proposta si sono prestati a rispondere a tutte le mie domande con tanta gentilezza e entusiasmo.

Quando ha iniziato ad avvicinarsi all’apicoltura nonno Heinz?

Quando ha iniziato questo bellissimo percorso? Nonno Heinz, classe 1939, fa fatica a rispondere. Ci pensa per bene, pare molto tempo fa. Ha iniziato con il suo papá da piccolino.

Anche lo zio -fratello di suo papá- era apicoltore. Ma non solo, anche un suo cugino aveva imparato a fare l’apicoltore sempre dal suo papá. Insomma, una passione dilagante nella famiglia Gäbler! Non si ricorda da dove hanno iniziato di preciso. Sa solo che ha cominciato il suo papá, il fratello ha scoperto questa passione aiutandolo e cosí hanno continuato.

Avevano iniziato prima della seconda guerra mondiale. Quando era in guerra non avevano cosí tante arnie pertanto il papá della sua mamma si era occupato delle api in quel periodo.

Ricapitolando: quando era piccolino aiutava il suo papá. Dopodiché, ai suoi 18 anni, nonno Heinz ha iniziato in modo piú autonomo. A questo punto siamo negli anni 60. Alla fine degli anni 60 lui e suo papá hanno costruito la nostra bienenhaus (una parte) e nel ’69 l’hanno completata.

Ai tempi non aveva le arnie che usiamo oggi, usava la bienenhaus e le arnie fatte dal suo papá.

Entra nel discorso in punta di piedi Nonna Eva (classe 1942). Le piace tanto la stanzetta annessa alla bienenhaus. L’ha sempre trovata molto rilassante, una sorta di stanza per gli hobby. Una finestra sulle arnie dove avere di tanto in tanto una sorta di aperitivo. Alcuni ospiti addirittura ci hanno dormito perché era super rilassante e tutti, ma proprio tutti, volevano vedere le api.

A questo punto mi sono chiesta: com’é essere la moglie di un apicoltore?

Insieme da una vita (l’anno scorso hanno festeggiato i 55 anni di matrimonio!) ed entrambi con tanto amore per la natura: uno per le api, l’altra per i fiori. Ammette che beh… é stato un po’ complicato! Purtroppo nonna Eva é allergica alle api, quindi ha paura. Una volta é stata punta e il braccio era molto gonfio (per non parlare del dolore!). Da quel momento in poi non si é piú avvicinata troppo (vero anche che non avevano nemmeno le stesse protezioni che usiamo oggi).

Nonno Heinz quindi stava spesso lí con le api, mentre lei non poteva. Questo le é dispiaciuto molto. Ci confida che le piace tanto il fatto che invece io e Basti possiamo lavorarci insieme.

Ecco, piccola parentesi: io non sono mai stata punta FINORA, spero proprio di non essere allergica. Ad ogni modo mi hanno raccontato che rabarbaro e succo di cipolla aiutano a far bruciare meno la puntura. Quando si viene punti da un’ape, é importante prendere un coltellino (o in alternativa un’unghia lunga) per estrarre il pungiglione, senza schiacciare se no ci si inietta ancora piú veleno. Anche nel togliere prontamente il pungiglione ovviamente un po’ di veleno c’é comunque. Tuttavia, qua mi garantiscono che un po’ di succo di rabarbaro e cipolla aiuta molto contro il dolore.

Chiusa questa parentesi, devi sapere che Nonna Eva ha un amore sconfinato per tutti i fiori. Ai tempi passava a prendersi cura dei fiori quando le api ‘dormivano’, giusto per essere sicura. Ad ogni modo ancora oggi nonostante gli acciacchi se ne prende cura e a seconda della stagione riempie la casa di tante bellissime composizioni colorate. Mi sono chiesta se questa sua passione per i fiori e il fatto di essere moglie di un apicoltore fosse una coincidenza e mi ha risposto di sí 🙂 é stata proprio una sua passione da sempre. Dopo aver trovato la sua dolce metá in un apicoltore ha imparato a optare per fiori che piacessero particolarmente alle api!

Alcuni aneddoti?

Nonna Eva non dimenticherá mai: vivevano qui nella casa dove ci troviamo ora tutti e 4. I genitori di nonno Heinz e la sua sorellina erano passati a salutarli. Appena arrivati, mentre passeggiavano, inizió una sciamatura. Lo sciame era attirato dai capelli della sorellina di nonno Heinz. Hanno subito coperto la testa con un panno bagnato. Mentre ascolto e prendo nota, io con gli occhi a palla, soprattutto quando mi dicono ‘aveva tanti capelli scuri, proprio come te!’. Poi hanno cercato di tranquillizzarmi aggiungendo che uno sciame non punge, non si é fatta nulla – spavento a parte.

Un’altra cosa che Nonno Heinz ricorda con il sorrisso: un giorno aveva preso un’ape regina da uno sciame e tutte le api erano attorno al suo braccio. Sempre piú. Io sempre con gli occhi a palla. Basti invece un po’ deluso: non era ancora nato ai tempi se no avrebbe fatto una foto. Mi é venuto spontaneo chiedere al nonno se non avesse avuto paura, ma mi ha risposto tranquillamente di no, era piú che altro divertito. Poi ha rimesso l’ape regina nella scatola e le api l’hanno seguita.

Sono cresciuti in mezzo alle api, neanche i bimbi avevano paura.

A proposito di bimbi, il bisnonno ha fatto anche apicoltura didattica ad alcune scuole. Aveva delle arnie in vetro. Soprattutto ai tempi non era molto usuale. Anche a nonno Heinz delle mamme avevano chiesto se era disposto a fare un po’ di didattica, ma non se la sentiva per la responsibilitá, in caso ad esempio di eventuali punture (ecco a sentire apicoltura didattica, lí i miei occhi si sono messi a brillare…magari un giorno…).

Un altro episodio che ricorda ridendo: lo zio e il papá erano alla bienenhaus. C’era anche un’altra persona dell’associazione degli apicoltori. Era un po’ borioso, si atteggiava perché era un capetto dell’associazione. Ad un certo punto il capetto inizió ad essere inseguito dalle api, ce le aveva tutte intorno alla testa (rieccomi con gli occhi a palla). Ecco che inizia a muoversi come un matto per liberarsene. Ad un certo punto, si é dovuto buttare per terra per mettersi tra i capelli il letame dell’orto e cacciarle via. Sai perché? Si era messo moltissimo profumo! Ecco, evita di improfumarti se mai ti vorrai avvicinare a delle api! 😉

Com’era produrre miele ai tempi della Germania dell’Est?

Nonno Heinz era un operaio metalmeccanico e seguiva le sue api nel tempo libero. Il bisnonno aveva piú di 30 arnie, ma lui ne aveva una decina. Ad ogni modo, api e miele costituivano un entrata in piú che gli ha permesso di togliersi qualche piccolo sfizio, come comprarsi la prima tv, avere un bel materasso comodo,…

Ai tempi l’ambiente era meno inquinato e le arnie erano sempre stracolme di miele. L’ecosistema ora risente dell’uso perpetuato di pesticidi nei campi. Questo ha rovinato un po’ tutto e ha impoverito la biodiversitá. Quando smielavano trovavano anche tanto miele di melata e anche piú varietá di miele.

Ai tempi della Repubblica Democratica tedesca (1950-87) non vendevano miele in vasetti come oggi, ma nelle tole di latta (presente quelle dove si conservava il latte?). Inoltre non lo si vendeva ai singoli consumatori, ma lo si dava allo Stato. In cambio ricevevano soldi e il governo lo rivendeva successivamente ai cittadini.

Qualche brutto ricordo?

Abbiamo chiesto se ha un brutto ricordo da apicoltore e ci ha riferito che almeno due volte dopo un inverno avevano perso completamente tutto. In quel periodo avevano 5 arnie circa e tutte cosí deboli da non sopravvivere all’inverno. Purtroppo puó succedere. Rimanda la causa di questa triste perdita ai fertilizzanti usati nei campi, altamente nocivi per gli impollinatori. Questo é ancora un problema generale attuale.

Al di lá di ció, non é riuscito proprio a dirci nulla di negativo sulle nostre amiche api. Nonostante la possibile stanchezza di tanto in tanto (piú che comprensibile vista l’etá) ha sempre tanta voglia di fare. Appena inizia la primavera, lo perdiamo ufficialmente! Se lo cerchi e lí nel suo apiario, tra le sue api. Sempre indaffarato. D’inverno rimangono il suo chiodo fisso e d’estate riempiono le sue giornate.

Cosa ama di piú dell’essere apicoltore? Come lo fa sentire?

Nonno Heinz adora il miele e le api perché fanno bene all’ambiente e senza di loro il mondo sarebbe nei guai.

Per lui é molto interessante vederle crescere e capire come sono organizzate.

Gli piace proprio tanto. Quando é nel suo apiario, si sente libero, curioso, calmo e si diverte (anche se spesso dice ‘scheisse!’, in tedesco ‘merda!’).

Gli piacerá il miele?

Non puó che rispondere ‘Ja!’

Ma sará meglio il miele o il cioccolato?

(attenzione nonno Heinz é golosissimo di cioccolato, vivrebbe solo di quello)

Ci ha risposto che il miele é meglio (la nonna non ci crede).

Dice che il cioccolato é piu ‘facile’, una sorta di snack a portata di mano. Tuttavia, gli piace di piú miele, se non trova il miele preferisce cioccolato 🙂

Alla nonna piace di piú il miele, ma non disdegna nemmeno il cioccolato, specialmente quello fondente. Il miele lo mangia generalmente a colazione sul pane. É un alimento che fa parte della sua quotidianitá. Le piace anche il fatto che lo puoi usare per un sacco di cose. Si ricorda anche che il bisnonno aveva usato il miele per una ferita da guerra aperta. Grazie alle sue proprietá antibatteriche ha aiutato a rimarginare ferite che facevano fatica a chiudersi da tempo. A questo punto si ricordano anche di quando nonno Heinz era giovane e si era fatto male al polpaccio andando in moto. Un’abrasione per l’aria calda. Ci impiegó tanto a sistemarsi la ferita, a quel punto suo papá gli aveva suggerito di mettere del miele e ció aveva aiutato.

E che ne pensa di Basti? é orgoglioso di lui?

Nonno Heinz ha risposto senza esitare (e ne ero sicura). É molto orgoglioso del nipote. Molto teneramente dice che é bravo, impara alla svelta ed é sempre pronto a pensare a come lavorare piú efficientemente. Tuttavia, col sorriso dice anche che dovrebbe sgridarlo meno spesso (a discolpa di Basti, non é facile mantenere la calma con un apicoltore ottantenne che non si ricorda minimamente di essere ottantenne).

Mi sono poi chiesta, data l’etá, se non ci fossero dei giorni in cui non abbia poi tutta questa voglia di visitare le arnie…

Anche questa pare essere una bella domanda, ci riflette un po’… ammette che sí purtroppo ci sono dei giorni cosí. Soprattutto quando fa troppo caldo e sa che deve lavorarci, non si puó rimandare. Lí é difficile mettersi all’opera, ma una volta iniziato, va liscio. Aggiunge che gli piace smielare, ma sia Basti che nonna Eva scoppiano a ridere perché giá dalla settimana prima inizia a sbuffare.

Perché una persona dovrebbe prendersi cura delle api? Qualche consiglio per chi volesse diventare un apicoltore?

Ed ecco qui la sua risposta: sicuramente bisogna essere motivati, avere pazienza, essere costanti ed essere davvero interessati a prendersene cura dalla A alla Z.

Che dire? Una guerra, una pandemia e il vaccino per il Covid, … Lui rimane arzillo e pimpante. Tutte le mattine si alza con calma, prepara la colazione per lui e nonna Eva. Passa a dirmi ‘Guten Morgen!’ addolcendo la solitudine del mio Smartworking a 1000 km di distanza da parenti e amiche. Poi via, tutta la giornata in apiario…saranno proprio le api il suo segreto di eterna giovinezza? Mah, spero di sí 😀
