Ma quanto é importante ispezionare le arnie? Ti ricordi quando avevamo approfondito l’importanza della prima ispezione dell’anno? Se vuoi ridare una spolverata ai punti toccati, puoi andare all’articolo In cosa consiste la prima ispezione dell’anno? – Gaeblini. Tuttavia, quella era solamente la prima di una lunga serie di controlli. Difatti, é molto importante che l’apicoltore ispezioni periodicamente le arnie. Per caritá, non ci deve cacciare dentro il naso tutti i giorni, ma in primavera/estate ogni circa 10-15 giorni almeno sarebbe da darci una controllatina. Perché? E poi, ok controllare le arnie ma dopo? Intendo dire, apri l’arnia, togli il favo e…cosa stai controllando esattamente? Cosa stai cercando? Cosa ti aspetti di trovare, mio caro apicoltore?

Immagina la scena: da un lato, Basti che osserva tutto concentrato con tanta premura il favo, dall’altro lato,io …che mi chiedo ‘Ma che sta succedendo? Che c’é?‘. Alle primissime ispezioni a cui ho assistito avevo la sensazione che mi stavo perdendo qualcosa di molto figo. Inutile dirti la valanga di domande che ponevo e continuo a porre a Basti al riguardo. Vuoi scoprire qualcosa di piú anche tu? Posso assolutamente capirti! E allora pronti, partenza e via…oggi ti portiamo a ispezionare con noi!

In primis…

Tuta e guanti di protezione. Per i piú spavaldi basta la parte superiore per coprire il viso (poi c’é nonno Heinz che non mette niente, ma lui non fa testo). Attrezzi. Eh sí, perché ci sono degli attrezzi che é importante utilizzare mentre si ispeziona:

  • Leva o palettina staccafavi: ma ‘ndo vai se la leva non ce l’hai? Le api tendono a chiudere ogni possibile buchino con cera e propolis. Con ogni probabilitá quando cerchi di tirare su il coperchio dell’arnia non ce la fai (o per lo meno fai molta fatica) perché é completamente appiccicato al resto. Questa leva é fondamentale per darsi una mano ad aprire l’arnia o separare i favi all’interno dell’arnia spesso incollati tra loro con ‘ponticelli’ di propoli e cera – ovviamente devi utilizzarla delicatamente.
  • La spazzola: si tratta di una bella spazzolona gigante per letteralmente ‘spazzolare’ via le api che si trovano sul favo (anche qui super delicatamente), se no é un po’ complicato osservare il favo ricoperto da un tappeto di api laboriose – non trovi?
  • L’affumicatore: un utensile che a me fa sempre tanta simpatia (non so perché!) – mentre di solito c’é un rapporto d’amore/odio dagli apicoltori nei suoi confronti perché non é sempre cosí semplice tenerlo acceso 🙂 ma che che cos’é? É un contenitore nel quale si mettono delle erbette o degli starter per accendervi il fuoco in modo da produrre fumo. Perché viene utilizzato? Questo fumo fará male alle api? No, ovviamente no. Come spiegato nel manuale ‘apicoltura tecnica e pratica’ di Alessandro Pistoia, il fumo comporta una reazione instintiva delle api: quella di spostarsi! É un qualcosa legato alla loro evoluzione: c’é fumo e pensano ci sia un incendio, quindi mollano qualsiasi cosa stiano facendo e vanno verso le loro scorte di miele, come per rassicurarsi che sia tutto ok. Detto ció, puoi ben capire che avere un qualcosa che calmi le api durante un’ispezione, é molto importante, oltre che rassicurante. Noi abbiamo sia quello classico e piú diffuso che una versione piú vintage un po’ particolare di nonno Heinz. Funziona a mo’ di pipa e viene comodo per ispezioni brevi (essendo piccolo). Inoltre, soffiando con la bocca, permette di avere le mani libere, mentre per l’affumicatore piú classico bisogna premere di tanto in tanto il mantice, altrimenti si spegnerá gradualmente.

Procediamo con l’ispezionare l’arnia…

Eccoci pronti per ispezionare le arnie, piú o meno bardati, con tutti gli attrezzi del caso! Arnia aperta taaac…prendiamo il primo favo verso di noi. Quella é – come l’ha soprannominata Basti per farmi capire cosa fosse – la ‘to keep busy frame‘, ovvero ‘il telaino per tenerle impegnate‘. Noi mettiamo sempre un telaino completamente vuoto, senza foglio cereo. Giá da lí, ispezionando riusciamo a capire quanto la famiglia sia forte e sana. Se hanno iniziato a costruire per conto loro il favo significa che sono belle attive. Se il favo é quasi completamente costruito, tagliamo via la cera e la teniamo da parte (non si butta assolutamente! Sai quante cose ci puoi fare??). E rimettiamo dentro il telaio vuoto, in modo da lasciarle divertire a costruire da capo.

Ma povereee…

Nooo, non é un dispetto, non si arrabbiano! A loro piace essere impegnate, é come un passatempo. No problem! Continuando l’ispezione, sarebbe ottimo se si trovasse l’ape regina, in modo da ingabbiarla durante i controlli, giusto per essere sicuri di non farle male o ucciderla per sbaglio (purtroppo puó succedere, specialmente se si é un po’ maldestri). Se non la si trova che scorazza di qua e di lá, bisogna fare ancora piú attenzione del solito.

Continuiamo ad ispezionare l’arnia…poi che si osserva?

Favo con parecchie celle reali…le vedi?

Semplicemente… le api! Ad esempio, se ne vedi alcune con delle malformazioni alle ali, potrebbe indicare la presenza dell’acaro varroa. Ispezionare le arnie significa anche cogliere quei campanelli d’allarme che indicano la presenza di determinate malattie al super organismo. Oppure come dicevamo la scorsa volta qui Sintomi da febbre sciamatoria: come prevenire la sciamatura? – Gaeblini, se si trovano le celle da fuco nella parte superiore e laterale del favo o se si trovano delle celle reali, si potrebbe avvicinare il momento di una sciamatura.

Se non c’é covata, vale a dire non ci sono cellette con delle larve da nessunissima parte, puó significare che non c’é la regina o che non ha ancora avuto il suo volo nuziale.

Cosa dovrebbero contenere le cellette?

Non solo miele, di tutto un po’! Sono dei veri e propri scaffali dove le apine immagazzinano svariate cose.

Nel melario ci troverai essenzialmente miele. Pertanto attenzione, se durante un’ispezione ci trovi delle larve devi farti delle domande: forse la griglia non é stata messa bene e la regina é riuscita a raggiungere il melario? E poi sempre per quanto riguarda il melario, ci trovi il miele sí, ma solo quando il favo é coperto o inizia ad essere coperto da uno strato di cera, significa che si puó smielare.

Passando al nido lo scenario cambia: qua si trovano le larve (se no che nido é??), ma anche polline, propoli e miele. Pertanto anche qui si trovano le scorte di cibo, come dicevamo qua ma cosa mangiano le api, se gli portiamo via il miele?? – Gaeblini. Il tutto ovviamente con una logica precisa e assoluto ordine: non é che trovi tutto a casaccio, per intenderci. Generalmente i due telaini piú esterni sono quelli delle scorte (miele, propoli, polline). Man mano si va verso il centro, nel cuore del nido, vale a dire la parte piú protetta, si trovano le larve.

Ora é un po’ piú chiaro perché é importante ispezionare le arnie? Anche qui abbiamo la conferma che l’arte dell’apicoltura é caratterizzata da tanta pazienza e spirito di osservazione. Ovviamente l’occhio critico si sviluppa man mano con l’esperienza e la formazione, non si nasce imparati. Ad ogni modo, come Basti ha accennato precedentemente in questo articolo Basti: da bimbo curiosone ad apicoltore tuttofare – Gaeblini, non é un’attivitá da improvvisare e richiede molto tempo e dedizione.
